WestJet closes Sunwing deal

The WestJet Group says it has closed its acquisition of Sunwing Vacations and Sunwing Airlines that was first announced in March last year.

The company says that, initially, the airlines will continue independent operations.

However, WestJet says the two airlines will move from being competitors to collaborators.

Vancouver’s April home sales down 16.5% from a year ago – Business News

The Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver said April home sales slid 16.5 per cent from a year ago as new listings remained below historical norms.

The BC board says sales for the month totaled 2,741, almost 16 per cent below the 10-year seasonal average.

The composite benchmark price for all residential properties in Metro Vancouver hit $1,170,700 last month, down 7.4 per cent from a year ago but up 2.4 per cent from March.

st. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — A Minnesota man who immigrated to the US and built a successful food business was named Monday as the National Small Business Person of the Year.

The honor for Abdirahman Kahin, CEO and owner of Afro Deli & Grill in St. Paul, was announced at an awards ceremony in Washington DC marking National Small Business Week.

Kahin, who immigrated to the US in 1996, opened Afro Deli & Grill in 2014 as a fast-casual restaurant serving healthy, fresh African fusion cuisine.

Judge denies Elizabeth Holmes’ request to stay out of prison while she appeals fraud conviction

A US District Court judge has ruled that Elizabeth Holmes, founder and CEO of the disgraced blood-testing company Theranos, cannot remain free on bail while she appeals her fraud conviction.

According to court documents filed Monday, Judge Edward Davila ruled that the portion of the conviction that Holmes is appealing is not likely to be overturned. A jury found Holmes guilty in January 2022 of four counts of fraud in connection with her leadership at Theranos. In November, she was sentenced to more than 11 years in prison.
